No hibernation for baby hedgehogs

baby hedgehogs

We currently have a couple of baby hedgehogs at the shelter, enjoying a little break from the cold, wet weather.

The one pictured above is shown next to a normal sized cat food bowl. When they are this small, they are unable to hibernate, and - when they try to - are likely to contract hypothermia and will eventually perish.

When these babies are a little bigger, and the weather is a bit warmer, they will be released close to where they were found, all set for the next hibernation period.
