Jumblers help to raise funds

Our Jumble Sale which took place on Saturday 15 March was incredibly well supported, despite the horrid weather !
This photo was taken fifteen minutes after our doors opened to the public, and you can see that we were busy from the outset! We raised a fantastic total of £385 on the day!
A great big thank you goes out to all our volunteers who helped out on the day ... they all deserve a mention .. Carol (Jumble Sale Co-ordinator), Heather, Jill, Beryl, Dave, Chris, Alison, Gerry, Den & Rose, Gwen, Stella, Rebecca, Ben and Georgia, June, Barbara, Sheila, Ann, Wendy.
St Francis Animal Welfare has traditionally always held jumble sales, since its foundation in 1955 !
Although there are now newer ways to raise funds for charities, we are happy to retain the more traditional methods as long as they keep bringing the money in for our animals!
Our Jumble Sales are usually held between 1pm and 3pm, but there is so much more work involved than what the visitors who attend our sales see.
In the run up to the event, a band of volunteers go through all the jumble donated to our Charity, and pick out the bits that we will be able to sell at our sales. Our volunteers will even take time to clean or wash some of the items.
A day or so before the event, more volunteers will set out the goods, ready to be taken to the Jumble Sale.
On the morning of the Jumble Sale, two volunteers will load up a van (which takes some precision work, in order to make the best of the room available and avoid further 'runs' and petrol costs), and then drive it to the venue where the Jumble Sale is being held, where it is then unloaded again.
At the venue itself, another lot of volunteers have been busy whilst waiting for the van to arrive. They begin to set out all the tables and prepare the kitchen area for serving teas, coffees and biscuits/cakes.
When the van arrives and the goods duly unloaded, the band of jumble volunteers set to work with bringing in the bags and boxes of goods, and then sorting them all out onto the tables -each category of goods in their own separate area (eg, clothes, books and videos, toys, household goods, ornaments, etc).
At 1pm, the doors are opened and the public pour into the hall, each paying a 30p entry fee to another volunteer at the door.
At the end of the sale, the volunteers start packing up their own tables. Everyone is so organised, that no direction is needed... everyone automatically starts putting goods back in boxes and bags, which are then loaded back onto the van... again, with as much thought as possible as to space, in order to ensure that only one load is needed - even though many goods have been sold throughout the day, we sometimes have just as much to take back, as many supporters bring their donations of goods directly to our jumble sale themselves.
The tables are folded and put away, the floors are swept, cups and saucers washed, dried and put away and the venue is left as it was found.
Another volunteer locks up and returns the key to the venue, and the driver departs with the van, which has to be unloaded and the goods locked away in the storage sheds again.
We have a fantastic group of volunteers who help us with our Jumble Sales - they all enjoy being involved in these events, and are only too happy to help raise money for the animals in our care ... every 50p raised is another can of food for a dog or a cat in our care!
